The common cold has for a very long time been the most common illness among adults and children alike. The good part about this statement is, that the common cold is really common and not something that you should be panicking about. With the right amount of care and treatment, common colds are easy to cure.

Parents can get really worried when something affects their child’s health. Watching their kids suffer from a common cold can be quite harrowing but there really isn’t any need to get alarmed! To begin with, get your kids to understand the importance of using preventive measures such as using a napkin or handkerchief when sneezing or coughing, especially between the third and fourth day of the infection when it is most contagious.

Here are some simple home remedies to ease the suffering from common cold:

Salt water works wonder on a blocked nose. Put a drop or two into your child’s nose to unclog it. Saline water is also available in most medical stores and pharmacies.

Let your child inhale steam to ease chest congestion and blocked nose. You can place boiled water into a vessel and let your child take the steam from this. However, make sure that the vessel is safe and doesn’t spill!

Stock up on cough drops. They can really relieve your child from throat ache and coughs. However, these should only be given to kids who are older than three years of age.

The skin just beneath and around the nostrils tends to get hard and cracks during a cold. Apply petroleum jelly to keep the area soft and pain free!

Diseases of the heart give a great deal of concern to those who are affected by the disease. Those who are the care takers of the affected person are also stunned by the diagnosis of heart disease. There are many kinds of heart diseases that are present. Some of these are not as dangerous as the other kinds of heart diseases. It is important for people to be aware of the various kinds of diseases to be able to identify the severity of the disease and also to know if the disease is fatal or simple.

The most common disease of the heart in young children is diseases like the ventricular septal defect and the atrial septal defect. This is commonly thought to be very severe, but the various technological advances in medicine have made it very easy to treat. Surgery is indicated in both these situations and the person has to be hospitalized for a short period for rehabilitation before the person can return home to normal activities.

The other disease that occurs in the heart is the damage to the valves in the heart. There are a few valves in the heart that allow the blood to flow in one particular direction. When these are damaged, the clean blood and the impure blood mix. This will cause various problems in the person and has to be controlled.

The other common disease that is seen in adults is the myocardial infarction. This is the disease in which there is occlusion of the blood vessels and the person has cardiac arrest. When there is no blood supply to the heart muscle, it will die. Even a small area of cardiac muscle death can be fatal.

Eczema is a common problem in children. There are two main reasons for the disease affecting children more than adults. The first reason is that the eczema is a hereditary disease. The disease can be transmitted from a affected person to their future generations. Though the disease is not contagious, the fact that it can be passed on from one generation to another through the genes w ill explain why a young child is more commonly affected than older people.

There is also another reason for the younger age group people being affected by this disease more than the older people. This is because of the fact that the child has very less immunity when compared to the older people. As a child is young, it can commonly be suppressed due to various reasons and so the disease is exacerbated in the patient.

These are the two main reasons for the disease being common in children. Another reason for the child to suffer from eczema is that various allergens can also lead to the disease. Since kids are much more prone to allergies, they may suffer from the disease to a large extent. Avoiding these allergens will help to prevent the disease from occurring. This is especially true for the kids who have already been identified to be suffering from this problem. This is because even a small duration of exposure to the material that is allergic will cause the person to suffer a great deal. Even proper medications cannot be given to a small child because of the risk of side effects. So, it is important to prevent the disease from occurring rather than treating it after it has occurred.

There are many causes of hearing loss. The cause of the hearing loss needs to be identified before treatment is started for a person. This is because once the cause of the hearing loss is identified, it is much easier to treat the person by focusing on the cause and correcting the cause of the loss.

The main cause of hearing loss is old age. As a person gets older, there are various changes that happen in the ear. The person is not alert anymore and this can lead to hearing impairment as the person does not concentrate on the source of the sound. Other than this, the affected person will also be suffering from problems like formation of wax in the ear, There could also have been sudden loud sounds to which the person may be exposed. When the loud sound occurs near the ear, it can lead to damage to the internal organs of the ear. This too can lead to hearing loss. Brain damage because of certain diseases can also cause hearing loss in a person.

If the hearing loss is due to the damage to the internal organs of the ear, then they can be repaired to an extent sand some hearing can e restored. If the damage is beyond repair, then the person should be given a hearing aid. If the hearing loss was due to the presence of wax, then removal of the wax will restore hearing in the person. Hearing aids are commonly used either to replace the hearing that was lost. The hearing aids will also help the person to supplement the hearing that is present. There are many kinds of digital hearing aids that can be used. There are some hearing aids that will even help a person to hear by transferring the sounds on the impaired side to the normal ear.

Obesity is a problem that is increasing all over the world. The problem that is caused by obesity are many in number. It is important for the person who is obesity to try and reduce the weight as soon as possible. If the weight gain is not reduced, then there is a high risk of various chronic diseases affecting the person. Other than the chronic diseases, the person can also suffer from other short term health problems.

The common chronic diseases that are caused in a person who is obese are listed here. The main problem that is seen is that the person may have excess storage of fat in the body. This fat can lead to increase in the blood pressure. The increased blood pressure may lead to problems such as heart attacks, strokes and can even be fatal for the patient. This is a common problem that has been seen in many obese people. Other than the diseases, there can also be degenerative changes in the bone leading to arthritic conditions. When there is weight loss, the bones will not be degenerated to the same extent as it will be in a obese person.

The obesity can lead to excessive fat deposits in the walls of the arteries. The artery walls that are clogged with the fat deposits will not allow the blood to flow through it in a free manner. This can lead to more problems. As the person will have fat deposits floating in the blood, it can lead to sudden stoppage of the blood flow leading to severe problems. If the blood that is going to the heart is affected, then the person will suffer from heart attack. The blood flow to the brain can be stopped by the fat deposits and this can lead to stroke. As these problems are common, obesity needs to be controlled by the person.

Wrist drop is a health problem that is caused because of the radial nerve damage. The radial nerve is the nerve that supplies the sensation to the back of the hand. It is also the nerve that provides strength to the muscles that cause the wrist to be extended. When the radial nerve is damaged, the person will not be able to move the wrist up. This means that the wrist extension is lost and this can lead to various problems in the daily activities of the person.

It is important that the person who is suffering from wrist drop is rehabilitated very early. The main need for rehabilitating the person is that the muscles that are paralyzed because of the nerve damage need to be stretched initially. The stretching of the muscles will prevent them from getting contracted. Once the stretching is done, the next step is to help the muscle to function again. For this, the person has to try and stimulate the muscle belly using electrical stimulation.

Other than the use of the stimulator, passively moving the joint to the full range will also help in maintaining the movement. When the muscle starts having even minimal motion in it, the next step is started. In this, the affected person has to move the muscle and the joint actively. In this stage, the muscle will function as much as it can and as the muscle is made to function, it will also help the muscle to increase in function.

The final step in the rehabilitation of the wrist drop is to use weights to strengthen the weak muscle. As weights are used to give resistance to the muscle function, the muscle becomes much stronger. When this activity is done repeatedly, the muscle will become normal in strength. This is the method in which the person will be able to have normal function restored to the muscles paralyzed in a wrist drop. There are times, when the person may also need to use some splints like a cock up splint that will prevent deformity and improve function.

Diabetes is a common disease that affects people of all age group. Even young children can be affected by the disease. There are times when even a small baby can be affected by the disease. Small kids are usually affected by the Type 1 diabetes, which is also called as the insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. The other kind of diabetes is the non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. This is a condition that is commonly seen in many people all over the world.

There are various health problems that are caused by diabetes. Some of the major health problems can be seen here. The major health problem that is seen in a person suffering from diabetes is that the person may have nerve damage. The nerve damage is commonly seen in the lower limb or the legs. As the nerves get damaged, the affected person will suffer from some kind of lack of sensation on the feet. This lack of sensation can either be a complete one or an incomplete one.

The lack of sensation in the feet of diabetics can also lead to further health problems. When the affected person walks with bare foot, there can be appearance of blisters because of the excessive pressure on the feet. These blisters can break down and form ulcers or wounds. As the person still has no sensation of pain, the person will keep walking on it again and again. This will finally lead to infection in the wound and the person may even have to undergo an amputation to prevent the infection from spreading to all the parts of the body. When the infection spreads all over the body, it can become septicemia and become fatal.

Other than the sensory loss, the affected person may also suffer from muscle weakness because of the nerve damage. The weakness of the muscles may prevent the person from walking normally. As the person is not able to walk normally, it will lead to further abnormal pressures on the sole of the foot leading to wounds. So, all the problems that are caused are inter related.

Communicable diseases can get around pretty quickly when people are infected with them and don’t even know it. If you’re someone who is constantly around people (hospital, school, church, library, etc.) and you notice that someone could possibly be infected, contact a doctor immediately. A report will have to be made to the health department. Here are a few steps on reporting communicable illnesses.

Report any communicable diseases within 24 hours of being diagnosed with it. Always let your Department of Health know about which communicable disease the person has. Just note that each state has its own department of health and each state will make you fill out a form so that you are able to report the disease.

There are several diseases that need to be reported immediately, these include rabies, anthrax, hepatitis A, SARS and rubella, just to name a few.

Next go to Department of Health’s website and find the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report that can be found on Centers for Disease Control and check the map that’s in the area you’re going to make your report in. If you get a little lost a long the way, contact 411 and get the number to the Department of Health in your state. You might have to report it to your county before you report it to the state. This is something you will need to find out about.

When filling out your report it’s important to give them all the information needed about the person that’s been infected. You will need the full name, address, number, sex, race, birthday, ethnicity, social and what disease the individual is infected with. If the person is a female, knowing whether or not she’s pregnant is good.

Communicable diseases can be contagious and it’s important to report any communicable diseases in your workplace to prevent it from spreading and getting serious. Remember to contact your local Department of Health to report any communicable illnesses.

Anyone experiencing hair loss knows that it can be embarrassing and annoying. For many people, hair loss just comes with age but for others it can be a sign of a more serious ailment. If you’re experiencing hair loss and believe it may be something more than just stress, you should talk to your doctor.

Below are some popular reasons for extreme hair loss:

Pattern baldness- This is a genetic disease that causes early baldness.

A side effect of inflammation caused by skin conditions like lupus

Getting your hair done too much (chemical damage)

Poor nutrition- If you’re low on protein or iron in your diet, it can provoke hair loss.

Medications

Diabetes

Medical treatments like chemotherapy or radiation

Pregnancy- Everyone knows that the body goes crazy while pregnant. Hair loss can be just one of the many side effects.

Scalp infections

Stress- The body does not react well to stress. Being stressed out can not only cause hair loss but other serious health problems.

If you are suffering from hair loss, there are many options. You can always buy propencia online or talk to your doctor about it. Propencia is a medicine prescribed by your doctor to help baldness. Or, if you’d like to go the more natural approach, there are herbal remedies to help.

Hair loss can be controlled with the help of your doctor. While there are various over-the-counter remedies, your doctor will know what is best for you.

Using Condom during sexual intercourse is one of the best ways to protect oneself, and one’s partner, from unwanted disease transmission. The thin membrane of a condom prevents the sensitive, thin skin of one person’s sexual genitalia from tearing and allowing blood or other fluids to rub against the thin skin of the other partner’s genitals. Its use has been attributed to a decline in the rates of unwanted pregnancies and diseases. There’s little wonder that many nightclubs hand out condoms for free to patrons, whose motive for being at the nightclub in the first place is to hook up with a partner. Using a condom takes the thought out of the process of worrying about whom your partner has been with, whether they’ve used intravenous drugs and shared needles, or whether they’re an active or dormant carrier of something harmful.

While the condom has been around in various forms for hundreds of years – early versions were crafted of such romantic materials as sheep’s intestines – its basic function of preventing sperm passage to the female’s eggs has always remained the same, at least for heterosexual couples. After a couple has been paired off for a while however, there is sometimes an itch to have more enjoyment in their intimacy. The urge to have greater intimacy and sexual pleasure, may lead the male partners to use Viagra or to buy cialis if necessary.

Sometimes the couples may even stop the use of condoms for greater intimacy; the idea here may not be the desire of having kids. In that case, there are numerous other birth control methods to consider. Most require consultation with a doctor to ensure correct dosages and instruction. But the range of options available, while vast, are mostly all complicated by their need to be rigorously maintained by following some sort of daily habit or ritual. If you don’t like the idea of using complicated birth control methods then condoms are always there as an alternative method of birth control and safe sex.

Are you addicted to sugar? It’s common knowledge that a high consumption of sugar can bring about diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease but kicking the habit can be just as difficult as giving up cigarettes. If you have a sugar habit here are a few tips on getting the upper hand.

Limit your sugar intake: Rocket science I know, but really many people think that in order to let something go a “cold turkey” approach is the only way. Cold turkey only makes rebellious types want the forbidden item more. Simply begin to cut back your sugar intake on your terms. If you usually pour sugar in your coffee without thinking, start using a teaspoon and come up with a limited amount, a boundary you cannot cross. At least this gets the mind going in the right direction.

Get an accountability partner: Whether it’s your mother, spouse or best friend give someone permission to speak up when you go overboard with sugar. Their presence will be a gentle reminder to take it easy and soon perhaps you won’t even need that reminder.

Keep the healthy foods you love within reach: This tip has probably made it around the world and back but it really is true that if you keep healthy foods around it will be automatic to reach for them. So, at your next trip to the grocery store avoid the sugary treats you are used to and enjoy shopping for vegetables, cheese sticks, fat free crackers or pretzles that will be a guilt free way to keep the munchies away.

There are not many people in this world who truly want to be sick. Most of us are trying our best to be well. Paying attention to how we relate to sugar could definitely improve our health and keep deadly diseases at bay. If lowering the amounts of sugar consumed can improve nutrition and quality of life it is well worth the sacrifice.

There are a lot of people out there who put off getting the medical care they need, simply because they are afraid that they are not going to be able to afford it. If you are of a low income status, you may qualify for medical assistance through your state government assistance office. Many states now have low cost medical insurance plans for those who make too much for the free health care but who are unable to pay the high costs of standard plans. This is something your state department can help you with.

If none of those options work, you will have to look into other options. There are some doctors offices that will bill you for services or that will charge according to a sliding scale. This means that they will take your income and number of people in your family into consideration. You could find yourself having to pay only half, or maybe even less, than what you would normally pay for medical services. In some cities, there are free clinics that you could take advantage of.

For those who are eligible for medical through their employer, you will want to make you are taking advantage of it. Even if it is a hundred dollars a month, the investment is well worth it. If you feel that it is still not something that you can afford, you might simply need to take another look at the expenses you currently have. Stop your cable television service. Stop eating out so often. Start taking your lunch to work instead of ordering out. There are probably a few changes you could make in order to make sure that you can afford health care.

In the mean time, while you are sorting all of this out, if you are having serious pains, you might want to make your way into an emergency room. There could be something going wrong that cannot wait for your next payday or for paperwork to be completed. Just make sure that no matter what you do, you are keeping yourself healthy.

Children seem to always make it to the doctor. Good parents would never put off a doctors appointment for their child. The thing is however, many of those good parents end up neglecting their own health. Even if the children are being properly cared for, if the parents are ignoring their own health, they are putting the future of their children at risk. After all, what would happen if you become terminally ill because of your lack of regard for your own health?

Even if you do not have children, there are probably a lot of people that count on you or who would be lost without you. To take it from a different perspective, your parents might just be offended if you fail to take care of yourself. Remember, they brought you into this world and broke their backs to take care of you all of those years.

Whenever you are experiencing any problem that is outside the realm of “normal” for you, it is important to make sure that you are seeking the advice of a trained professional in the medical field. You might find that the nurse practitioner is all you need. It could be just the flu. However, it could be pneumonia and you can die from that.

If you are not feeling ill, you still want to make sure that you are doing everything in your power to make sure that you are getting regular check ups. With regular check ups, your doctor will be able to spot problems before they get out of hand. Your doctor could help you change something, should it be suspected that you are on the verge of a problem.

Those who seek the help of doctors and who have regular checkups, are much healthier than those who don’t. All you have to ask yourself is whether or not you would like to live for a long time and how healthy would you like to be during your final years.

The signs and symptoms of depression can be subtle or explosive. This is what makes it so difficult for people. You might be slipping into a depression and not even realize it. Sure, you might just feel “down in the dumps”, but if this feeling is persisting after a couple of months, you are most likely suffering from one form of depression or another.

Depression can come on out of no where. Sometimes it can be linked to an emotionally traumatic event. Other times, it is simply something that runs in the family. Even if no one in your family has been hospitalized or has taken medication for depression, it does not mean that it doesn’t run in the family. All that might mean is that it was never diagnosed.

Some common signs of depression are sudden weight loss or weight gain, sleeping too much or too little, suicidal thoughts, thoughts about hurting others, extreme anger, crying fits and a simple feeling of not caring about the future. If you feel that you are simply going through the motions of life, you may have depression.

If depression is left untreated, it could get worse. That is not something that you want to have happen. Make sure that you are talking to friends or family about what you are going through. This way, they can be more supportive and understanding of your situation. The next thing to do is to make sure that you are seeking professional help.

There are many ways to seek help. You can talk with your family doctor and usually a mild form of an anti-depressant can be prescribed to you. You can talk to a therapist and you will eventually be referred to a psychiatry professional for medication.

However, if at any time you feel as though things are too much to bare or you are having thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, you are going to need to go to the emergency room. Check yourself into the mental health ward and seek immediate help.

It is extremely important to learn the medical history of your family. When you do this, you will not only be able to protect yourself but your future children as well. For example, two healthy people could get married but if the two of them both carry a certain gene, they could end up with children with severe medical conditions.

Then there are the simple things you want to be aware of. If diabetes runs in your family, then you want to be extra careful to make sure that you are watching your weight and what you eat. You also want to make sure that you are getting enough exercise.

For those who have cancer in the family, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun and avoiding cigarette smoke is best. While you might not be able to avoid certain medical conditions, making simple changes to your lifestyle can help better your odds of leading a healthy and productive life.

A lot of the information you need can be found by talking with family. Your parents might know a good bit of information about their parents and grandparents. This way, when the doctor asks you about medical conditions or diseases that run in the family, you will know what to say.

Besides being able to actively reduce your chances of getting the medical problems your family suffered from, your doctor needs to know your family history. The only way for him to know this is for you to inform him. This way, he can be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of diseases or conditions that run in your family line.

The more you know about your medical history and the medical history of your loved ones, the easier it will be to take care of yourself. You will be able to pass this information on to your children and grandchildren so that they are informed as well.

Not many women enter into their pregnancy thinking about the postpartum depression that could be awaiting them. However, anywhere from 30 to 80 percent of new mothers will end up what is often times referred to as the”baby blues”. This is typically a mild form of the depression and within a matter of days, it will normally resolve itself. Generally, the symptoms include anxiety, sadness, insomnia, moodiness and fatigue.

The thing is though, about 10 percent of new mothers will end up with major depression. This depression can start right after having the baby or it could strike anytime within the first year of the child’s life. Some of the symptoms include profound sadness, poor concentration, intense crying spells, thought of suicide and feelings of inadequacy. In extreme cases, new mothers have been known to harm themselves or the children around them.

It is important to make sure that you are prepared for the possibility of the onset of postpartum depression. This way, you will realize that what you are feeling is not really you, it is the depression and you can seek medical attention. If you have a loved one that is pregnant, it is important to make sure that you are learning as much as you can about postpartum depression. This way, you will be able to spot the signs and symptoms in case the new mother does not.

Know that with the right treatment and a little patience, postpartum depression is something that you will be able to beat. A combination of therapy, support from friends and family and medication might just be what you need. Make sure that you are taking care of yourself and as a new mother suffering from depression, it is essential to make sure that you are getting as healthy as possible.

It still seems that there are a lot of people who tend to think that depression is not something you openly talk about with other people. You need to remember something. This is not a condition that you need to be embarrassed about. You did not cause it. However, you are the person that can get rid of it or at least get the symptoms under control. Of course, you are going to need a little outside help for that.

If your depression is mild, you have some time to play about with home remedies and therapy, without the use of medication. There are a lot of self help books and church leaders that may have some great tips and advice for you. Now, if you are using herbal remedies or over the counter medications, you want to make sure that they are not going to interact badly with any medication that you are already taking.

For those who are suffering from severe depression, it is important to make sure that quick medical attention is sought. You have the choice of contacting a primary care doctor and setting an appointment or you can go directly to the emergency room and check yourself in to the mental health ward. The route you take should depend on how bad your symptoms are. If you have had or are currently having thoughts of suicide, then you want to go directly to the emergency room. Call 911 if you have to.

The sooner you get help for the depression, the sooner you will feel like you are your old self again. If you do end up with medication, make sure that you are taking it responsibly. The last thing you want to do is to mess with your body or chemical balances any more. Also, do not worry about the medication or how long you will have to be on it. Some will be on medication for only a few months while others need a few years. Everyone is different.

Too many people are not taking their diet seriously. This is a major problem in the United States and many fear that it is just going to get worse. So many people are consumed with fast food and processed microwavable food that hardly anyone ever takes the time to cook a good old fashioned home cooked meal. Even though it is a little more work, it is well worth the effort.

People will say that they simply do not have the time. Maybe you are one of those people. However, if you have the time to run to a million stores, hang out with friends, go to the movies, run to soccer, dance, gymnastics and the bar, then you have time to make a meal at home for your family. Some might say that it is because of all of those things that they cannot eat proper. Think about it though, you are prioritizing your life. The things you do with your day are important. Make eating healthy an important thing and you will see that you will find time for it.

Even when you are on the go and you need a quick snack, if you shop smart, you should have plenty of things that you can take with you. Grab some carrots or celery sticks. Some wheat crackers are better than a candy bar and make sure that you have plenty of ice cold water on hand.

For those who really are limited on time during the week, you will want to make sure that you are picking one day where you prepare a bunch of different dinners. You can freeze them and pull them out as needed. Label them with the days of the week and then all the family will have to do is pull them out and pop them in the microwave or oven. This is a much safer and healthier option than traditional store bought microwave dinners.

Besides being extra tired throughout the day, there is a lot of physical harm that can be the result of not getting enough sleep. On the other hand, too much sleep is not going to do you much good either. Simply put, you need to make sure that you are getting just the right amount of sleep every night. This will help you make sure that you are remaining as healthy as possible and that you will live a very long life.

Even though some might laugh at the thought, there is evidence that shows that a lack of sleep can eventually lead to a premature death. According to many researchers, those who get less than five hours of sleep a night have a 24 percent higher chance of developing diabetes. People who sleep more than nine hours a night on a regular basis have a 48 percent higher risk of developing this disease.

While some might think that over sleeping is what is more likely to lead someone to become obese, it is actually those who sleep less than five hours on average that have a bigger chance of becoming obese. Since there are obviously a lot of medical problems that are associated with a lack of sleep, it is important to make sure that you are getting enough.

It is suggested that even as an adult, you should try to get eight hours of sleep a night. This might mean that you have to go to bed earlier. If you find that you have trouble falling asleep, you will want to avoid caffeine after the afternoon hours, avoid sugary foods and make sure that you are reading a good book before bed. Many people find that if they read, they end up falling right to sleep after a long day.

Many young people are taught about sexual transmitted diseases. They are probably the most informed when it comes to the present dangers out there. Believe it or not, there are new diseases that have been discovered and contracted that many older generations are not aware of. This is because everyone concentrates on educating the younger generation. Let’s face it though, the older generations are participating in consensual sexual relationships as well. The only surefire way to not get a sexually transmitted disease is to refrain from sexual intercourse all together. Once you begin having sex, you are at risk. Now, it would be advisable that every time you start with a new partner, the two of you go get tested for diseases. Not everyone seems to want to do that though. Using a male and female condom is the next best thing for making sure that you are safe from diseases. The last thing you want to do is to throw caution to the wind and go without any sort of planning, testing or protection. It will not be all that romantic once you contract an ugly disease. You want to make sure that you are being as safe as possible, not just for yourself, but for your partner as well. If you are not in a stable relationship or having intercourse with the same partner all of the time, you will want to make sure that you are at least getting yourself tested for STD’s every six months. This is because something you contracted a month ago, might not show up on this month’s STD test. This is why people are advised to be tested every six months. As you can see, there is a lot of responsibility on your shoulders. That is never going to change. You have to make sure that you are staying as healthy as possible and that is going to be through prevention. Not all sexually transmitted diseases are curable.

Often people wonder, do they really need car insurance? General perception is like this – I have never been involved in an accident, I never drink and drive, I follow all the traffic regulations and most importantly, I drive safely. True. But what people fail to take into consideration is a driver can get involved in an accident no matter how careful they are at the wheel. While driving along a road, a random vehicle swerves out of control and rams into your car. The driver of the other vehicle may be at fault, nevertheless, your car is damaged and you may be injured. If you have good coverage, your insurance will cover injuries, car repairs, and a rental car–in no time you’re back to normal within few days.

Now, apply the same logic to swine flu vaccinations that were purchased in huge quantities by the most affected countries (including the U.S). The media reported that the decision to raise the swine flu threat to a pandemic alert was largely influenced by pharmaceutical companies who were engaged in production of swine flu medications. This line of thinking would be like reporting that the government is working with insurance companies to make car insurance compulsory. This isn’t happening.

The H1N1 virus which causes swine flu mutated and infected people rapidly became ill or succumbed to the virus. The world barely had time to react to the situation, because countries were unprepared. Countries moved quickly to buy medications and vaccines from the only pharmaceutical companies that were producing them. No one wishes to contract a possibly fatal disease, just as no one wants to feel helpless when they have an accident in their car. Being prepared is the key, spend time considering all your option then act to protect you and your family.

People implicitly trust their doctors partly because they often feel a sense of inferiority when communicating with them. Many feel that since they don’t have the same training, they aren’t qualified to challenge the findings of their physician. Many physicians encourage this dynamic for egotistical reasons and those are probably not the type of doctors your want to be working with. You are responsible for your treatment and what road you choose and it is easier than ever to educate yourself with the easy access to the Internet. Since you are going to live with the outcome, you need to be in the driver’s seat when it comes to your medical care.

Do you wonder about the latest prescription and whether your doctor recommended it because they had thought it fit you and your current condition best? Did you ever wonder that they may have prescribed it because the pharmaceutical companies sent them paper pads with the name of the drug on it and it came first to mind? These are questions to ask yourself when considering who you are going to employ as your doctor. Studies have shown that when presented with a difficult diagnosis, an optimistic and seemingly knowledgeable physician gives much more reassurance to the patient and their loved ones which translates to higher positive results. Those who are pessimistic and prescribe drastic treatments while scoffing at other possible methods have much more depressed patients who don’t fare as well. When presented with a trying situation, do not be afraid to get two, three, or even twenty opinions. Many doctors will have very different interpretations of situations and recommend very different treatment options. You want the one that is best for you.

When it comes to medical care, trust your instincts and don’t be intimidated. If you have a good feeling about a doctor, that should be strongly considered when determining who you decide to trust. You are in the driver’s seat of your own life so take the reigns and take control of what is happening. It will, at the very least, help calm your fear.

Listening to modern trends is natural, but what about considering the different thoughts of the past? Is there any credence to combining what different forms of “common sense” were and are? Being a larger woman was considered beautiful by many cultures but as Europe evolved, possessing an hour glass figure was considered more and more attractive and desirable. From China to the Pacific Islands to Europe, “Rubenesque” (or full figured women) represented fertility and an abundance of resources. Women who were fuller figured were most often the wives or consorts of the most powerful and wealthy men, which meant that they were representations of never having to go without.

Today, being slender represents abundance and beauty throughout most of the modern world. In some parts of the world like Africa and with many different tribes of native islanders, being fuller figured is still what is considered physically desirable in a woman. As most health professionals prescribe, gaining a bit of weight is healthy for a woman who is pregnant or who is nursing.

Today’s standards and the extreme route that are taken to be or appear slim despite natural circumstances have a debilitating mental and emotional effect on women who are doing what is naturally healthy. With modern fads are aligning with being of a lesser weight, there have been many other methods that have sprung up in the last century and particularly the last few years in the quest of thinness. From no fat (totally lean proteins and free reign on carbs) to low carbs (fats being fine, just no sugars or starches no matter how natural), what’s a person to do with today’s advice? Common sense dictates that one should eat a diet with a good balance of healthy fats, proteins, and carbohydrates and include vegetables as a major dietary contributor. Having a plate full of food that is as unprocessed as possible is a good indicator of its health. Many colors in the contents (unprocessed of course) is also a good meter. Fads come and go but being balanced will keep you running happily for years.

Many societies believed that simply eating less would make the difference when trying to lose a few pounds. In other cultures, women were fed large amounts of specific foods like fruits and meats for the specific purpose of gaining weight. Methods like drinking nothing but milk before marriage in order to gain weight for fertility (like tribes in Uganda practice) help women to gain weight, but in the United States, famously slender women pose for milk ads proclaiming that the mostly protein content of the drink helps to keep body weight low.

So when different societies do the same thing with opposing intentions and both see evidence to support their beliefs, who is right? Some places eat nothing but fish and rice while others eat fatty pork, oils, and starches like corn. Some societies eat avocados and other fruits with abandon and appear thin and agile, while their societies hold records for high levels of longevity. Others, like France, smoke, eat fatty cheeses, and drink several times per day while achieving the same or very close levels of very low mortality rates. So when many different people make completely contradictory choices while receiving the same benefits, who is right? And is there a “right choice”?

With many different diet fads throughout the centuries but particularly in the last century, picking them apart for commonalities will make one crazy. They are completely contradictory and yet there are many people for each method who will attest to their efficacy and many (often many more) who will attest to the fact that they are flukes.

The ancient and yet newly discovered thought (brought to the forefront of female thinking by such books as “Women, Food and God” by Geneen Roth and predicated by Deepak Chopra’s “Perfect Weight” indicate that our bodies know what’s best and imbibing (or over-imbibing) in substances is a result of emotion and not physical hunger. The argument is made that when listening to one’s instincts, perfect nutrition is achieved and when ignored, eating is one of many routes to drowning out our perfect, human instincts. It is food for thought.

It is extremely unwise to procrastinate emergency or otherwise urgent medical treatment. When faced with a serious injury or disease, the emergency room at your nearest, local hospital is the first place you should head. When dealing with a chronic condition that verges on serious (or even if it is a newer situation too), visiting a doctor quickly should be a top priority. However, many people employ those services very frequently when it is obviously not necessary to do so, at least until some simpler, more accessible, and more economical treatments have been tried. Again, if there is a serious, or persistent situation present, medical care should be sought as quickly as possible.

For very minor burns, there is a treatment recommended by many cooks and restaurant staff that may help you get back on your feet quickly. Applying some salt (and perhaps a tiny amount of water first so the salt will stick) to the burn and then tightly winding it with a band aid has been reported to heal burns quickly without a blister rising. It is best to run the burn under cool water for several minutes first. Salt can also work on itchy ant bites. When the wound is open, use very clean hands to apply salt to it and then wrap it up. The theory is that the salt disinfects the affected area while drawing out the irritating substances.

Pastes made from sugar or honey are great on cuts, particularly ones that are in danger of becoming infected. Sugars and honey have been used world wide as traditional medicines in many different cultures. They also help prevent scarring.

Apple cider vinegar is great when you have been having issues with heartburn. If you have been dealing with a toothache or gum irritation but can’t get into the dentist for a few days, swish 3% hydrogen peroxide. It will help oxygenate the areas that are irritated. Some specialists say to dilute it in half with water while others say undiluted 3% strength is fine. Be sure to check the label as anything stronger could be very dangerous.

In millennia past, there have been all kinds of plagues and pestilence. Mortality rates for human beings were shockingly high by today’s standards. Life expectancy throughout most of history was half of what it is in the modern world within the first world nations. There obviously were many factors in play but what were the most common denominators across the board? Sanitation and the cleanliness of available water were big influences in determining how disease flourished or dwindled throughout a society.

Methods like fermentation were groundbreaking in making hydration available. Particularly in lands that were not always privy to consistent moisture, storing water was essential for survival. But water can easily become dangerously contaminated when not stored properly and in ancient times, knowing how to store it properly was not information that was available. Beer, mead, wine, and other types of alcoholic beverages were made by fermenting sugars derived from grains or fruits and were essential to the survival of some societies, as they had a much longer shelf life than improperly stored water.

Waste management was a major issue as well. During the Industrial Revolution in America, there was much wealth and commerce in the epicenter of American culture at the time, New York City. Because of the massive population growth at the time from immigration, many shoddy tenements popped up with people crammed in from wall to wall. Without any proper system for waste disposal, disease rates skyrocketed and mortality rates went through the barely constructed roofs. When a proper sanitation system was instilled, the disease rates drastically dropped. Obviously, cleanliness was a major issue in preventing illness.

Many people, however, are arguing that we have taken it to an extreme today. Most people know that washing hands after using restroom facilities, before eating and preparing food, and whenever contact with an ill person has taken place increases one’s chances of remaining healthy. But with the rampant use of hand sanitizers by some, the argument is that our immune systems are not getting enough exposure to bacteria to fight infection. Slightly relaxing their standards may sustain optimum health.
