When taking home a new baby from the hospital for the first time, many first time parents are completely perplexed and overwhelmed at their new responsibility. Even if one has extensive experience babysitting, changing diapers, and making bottles, having a child of your own changes everything. Many first time parents cannot believe that the hospital, doctors, or government actually entrusted them with the new little life that they are in charge of keeping safe and healthy. While there are many books on the market about different parenting strategies, they are all from different voices and very often contradictory, leading parents to doubt their innate instincts to make good choices, and the ability to do the job effectively. Since there is no handbook, a checklist with a few necessary tasks can be very helpful in organizing one’s thoughts and feeling back in control of the situation.

When newborns are hungry, they often root around looking for food before they cry in hunger. Feeding them during that period prevents them from getting too upset to eat well. Once you have seen it a few times, you will know the cues that are unique to your baby. Fussiness is also similar with eye rubbing and head bobbing as they get sleepier. Check diapers frequently and you will soon notice a correlation between an irritated fuss or cry and other cues for pain, sleepiness, and hunger.

Most umbilical cords stay attached for a few weeks after birth. Disinfect the area at least once daily with 70-100% rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab. While it may make you squeamish, you need to be gentle but very thorough when cleaning. If it starts to smell unpleasant or is not drying out, make sure you show your pediatrician. They can recommend the appropriate treatment when they see it. Do not try to remove the cord stump as it should be allowed to shed itself when it is ready. When bathing the baby, use a special newborn net that comes with most baby bathtubs to prevent the baby from being submerged. The cord should remain as dry as possible.

Well Groomed Babies are Healthy and Happy

There are a lot of aspects to keeping your baby groomed. While intimidating, clipping a newborn’s nails is important, since they can easily scratch themselves. Hand covers work for a while but eventually they can become cumbersome. Clipping nails very gently two to three times a week will help keep things under control. Use good lighting and possibly magnification. If your eyes aren’t strong, ask for help from someone who has good eyes and steady but gentle hands.

When bathing a baby, the most important thing is to never leave your child alone in the bathroom until they are several years old. Even running a few feet out the bathroom door is extremely dangerous. A good rule of thumb is to always be in physical contact with your baby when they are being bathed so you are less tempted to run out. While that sounds like common sense, after you have bathed your baby several times and let your mind wander as you bathe them, it’s frighteningly easy to catch yourself thinking about running to grab something you may have forgotten. If it is absolutely necessary to have the item to complete the bath, have another person get the item for you or take the baby out of the tub, wrap them in a towel, and take them with you to fetch the item. Be careful to keep your baby’s face well above the water at all times.

Before your baby’s bath, it is wise to make a mental check list of everything you will need before hand so that everything can run smoothly. Tear free baby shampoo and wash, wash cloths, and a towel are necessary. After the bath, dry them off and apply a diaper quickly. This is a great time to rub lotion on the baby and give them a massage. Keep the parts of them you are not massaging wrapped in the towel so they don’t get cold. Finish off with pajamas. It is a great nighttime routine to help you and your baby bond and to give them a solid cue that bedtime is coming.

Miraculous Breast Milk

Breast milk is a complex, perfectly structured food designed to feed babies exactly what nutrients they need at the right time. Modern science is only just beginning to understand its complexity. Even premature babies who are breastfed from their mothers receive a completely different type of formulation that full term infants.

Babies who breastfeed are not only healthier as babies during the time that they are nursing and receiving vital immunity information from the mother’s body, but research has shown time and again that people who benefited from breastfeeding as babies were much less likely to be sick throughout their lives. They report fewer incidences of colds and cases of influenza. They also did not get nearly the same number of ear infections as a child, thus avoiding the complications that can persist throughout life. People who were breastfed are also less likely to experience cancers.

In fact, new studies on methods of cancer treatment are looking into using breast milk as a treatment itself. As a living tissue much like blood (and being packed full of healing white blood cells itself), scientists are hypothesizing that many healing properties are waiting to be discovered in breast milk. They have already discovered that breast milk contains vitalizing stem cells, the cells from which all physical bodily components are derived. All body parts begin in utero as stem cells and a stem cell can become an eardrum, a fingernail, an eye, or a liver. With the new understanding that stem cells are available in breast milk, they may be able to be harvested and used to grow or regenerate bodily functions that are not working properly. In the near future, we may be able to grow a new heart for someone needing a transplant or a pancreas for diabetics. Even things like baldness could potentially be treated (and imagine the market for cosmetic procedures alone when you can grow new tissue from your own stem cells). The scientific and medical possibilities are endless and breast milk has the potential of playing a dramatic role in the amazing unfolding that could take place.
